Language Proficiency

Learning Turkish was one of my best decisions I made during my time at the University of Pittsburgh. Learning Turkish made me feel more connected to the Pittsburgh community because there is a relatively active Turkish population here. I have been able to speak to many Turkish people in Pittsburgh as well as friends from abroad. Language learning is very important to the way we interact with the world because when we talk to people from other countries we are able to view our own problems differently.

I will definitely use these language skills in the future because I plan on returning to Turkey and to continue talking with Turkish-Pittsburghers. Learning the Turkish language has also brought me to learn a lot about Turkish culture.  I was able to visit Turkey before starting at the University of Pittsburgh. Although I was not able to use the language skills that I gained through taking classes, I was able to bring a lot of background to the topics that we were covering every week.
