Deciding to study another language has completely changed the trajectory of my life. Language study has shaped all of my study abroad experience and a lot of my travel on my own time. Studying Spanish has also shaped my professional development – after all, it was my Spanish language skills that got me my first internship with Casa San José.
I hope to continue learning and using my Spanish, but I’m not sure if I will use it in the work force. There are so many qualified Latino-Americans that live in the United States that are natively bilingual, so I feel as though in the Communications field they would be more suited to do many jobs that I will also apply for. I would be honored to use my language skills in a business setting if the opportunity arises.
Through learning another language, particularly Spanish, I have cultivated a passion for the ongoing immigration crisis in the United States. Without my experience with Casa San José, an immigrant rights organization in Brookline, I don’t think I would have such a comprehensive knowledge of the injustices happening in our world right now. Since first working with them, I have twice attended a national conference/vigil/gathering at the border wall in Nogales, AZ/Nogales, Sonora. I hope to continue attending this annual event.
