Global Studies Coursework

My coursework has focused on the intersection of business and global political and economic processes. Through my varied coursework relating to multiple international subjects including the social and economic injustice of the fast-fashion industry, the impact of the Florentine Renaissance on the development of modern-day Europe, and the increasing importance of global marketing campaigns, I have obtained a holistic viewpoint of the influential factors on all aspects of business – from political policies, economic situations, and even long-held cultural traditions.

Coursework Descriptions

As an introductory course to the concept of global studies, I was able to analyze global business from a political and economic viewpoint.  With a strong focus on globalization and capitalism, I gained in-depth knowledge on the effects of climate change, dictatorial regimes, and perfunctory or even insidious governments on a nation’s commerce and business functioning.

This course discussed the fragile political landscape and the complex interactions between countries, political organizations, and people. With a focus on major historical periods, game theory, conflicts, and resolutions, I studied the lasting impacts of each on today’s political and economic policies, both in the United States and elsewhere.

As a business course, the information consisted of how to mitigate global issues and strong political and economic influences to maintain a well-functioning, healthy business that supports all people while increasing revenues, profits, and brand loyalty.

The key to a successful marketing campaign is to know your audience through in-depth and dynamic marketing research, comprehensive understanding of consumer behavior, and targeted messaging. However, a target market, even if they share the same demographics of age, gender, household income, vary drastically depending on the country in which they reside. Depending on cultural and societal norms, the political atmosphere, and traditions, marketing campaigns must be altered for different geographic areas and international markets in order to achieve success.

A well-managed and efficiently functioning supply chain is essential for any business. In a globalizing world, international supply chains are becoming more predominant and important. It is imperative for a business leader to properly research governmental rules and regulations (including environmental, commercial, economic, etc.) when planning locations for manufacturing/distribution centers or when choosing suppliers and vendors.

This course, though with the title “Global French” truly provided a view of francophone art, literature, theater, and cinema through a global lens, focusing on the reach of French culture (and imperialism) throughout the globe. Topics touched on in this course were the origins of France, initial commerce and diplomacy by western travelers (Marco Polo in the 1200s), French colonialism in Africa, French hedonistic perceptions of “the other”, and the lasting impact that France as a nation has had on the global world of the past and present.
