Salena Ringenbach

Greetings! My name is Salena Ringenbach.  I grew up in Phoenixville, PA which is a suburb of Philadelphia.  At the University of Pittsburgh, I am majoring in Neuroscience with a minor in Chemistry and a certificate in Global Health & Well-Being. After my graduation in December 2019, I plan to work in the hospital for a year to gain clinical experience as I prepare my applications for medical school.  I want to become an osteopathic physician (DO) and to specialize in primary care with a focus on global health. After earning my medical degree, I hope to work globally in the medical field, possibly with Doctors Without Borders, before I eventually open my own practice closer to home.  I chose to complete the certificate in Global Studies with a concentration in Health & Well-Being because I think it is a very interesting and valuable complement to my core courses and my career aspirations.   The Global Studies classes I have taken have enabled me to think about science and medicine from other perspectives which are not typically discussed in science classes at Western institutions.  I believe that my exposure to topics such as holistic care and different cultural conceptions of medicine will help me to be a better doctor for my patients in the future both in the US and abroad.
