Across Africa, there is a widely used phrase, “Ubuntu”, which originates from South Africa. This phrase directly translates to the word “humanity” and is a part of the Zulu phrase meaning a person is a person through other people. This emphasizes the importance of putting our community above ourselves.
My journey at the University of Pittsburgh has been an impactful experience of self-discovery where I have found a a love and passion for service, community organization, and leadership. Currently I am pursuing an MPH in Epidemiology with the goal of gaining skills to combat health disparities that stem from inequitable access to health.
My educational experience and extracurricular experience has provided me with the skills and tools necessary to make an impact on my community and create change. Pitt has helped me embody Ubuntu by teaching me that the sky is the limit when it comes to impacting others and myself. And to me, that is the foundation of Ubuntu—to devote yourself to something greater than just you; something that affects an entire community through passion and empathy.
