Co-Curricular Engagement on Campus

I was heavily involved in the Pitt Progressives club on Pitt’s campus. This club works to create change on Pitt’s campus as well as in the Pittsburgh region more generally. This club led multiple projects to create change. For instance, we organized a Women’s Empowerment Week where we held open discussion groups, held a hygiene drive, and even led a march on campus! Additionally, this club helped to promote a graduate student union on our campus. We have also been involved in canvassing and electing politicians in the Pittsburgh area.

I served as the business manager for this club from December 2017 to December 2018. I budgeted and handled money for the club as well as reserved meeting rooms and tables for the club. Additionally, I helped the executive board plan general body meetings, political actions, and guest speakers for the club.

This club has proven to me my interest in creating change locally and proven how small groups of people can make a meaningful difference.

Local Community Engagement

I have been involved at Pitt on projects such as Arrival Survival, Pitt Make A Difference Day (PMADD), and PittServes. I assisted students with move-in as well as provided directions and instructions to parents during Arrival Survival. Additionally, I have participated in PMADD multiple times and have aided in projects such as creating a rain garden for a community center and cleaning up yard waste for a neighborhood. Also, I assisted a PittServes project where we planted vegetables in a community garden.

Another way I have engaged with the community is through canvassing. I have canvassed for politicians in the Pittsburgh area as well as for the Oakland Community Land Trust. I helped the Pitt Progressives club to canvass for a District Justice candidate and a State Representative candidate, both which went on to win their elections. Additionally, I have canvassed for the Oakland Community Land Trust during my internship at Oakland Planning and Development Corporation.

These involvements have made me invested in helping out my community as well as using elections as a tool to create policy change in the future.
