French – Intermediate

Language and language learning is pivotal to the global community as it is a large factor in the ability to connect with another. It is known that native English speakers typically are monolingual whereas non-native English speakers across the world are most likely to be at the very least bilingual and, at the very most, polyglots. This is a direct reflection of the cultural dominance the United States has in global media. Despite this fact, however, being monolingual is one of the largest disadvantages one could have as our world continues to move toward globalization.

Language is a key factor in understanding Cultural Dynamics. Certain languages, for example, have words that will be conjugated depending on whether you are speaking to someone younger than you, an agemate, or an elder. In societies with such languages, a  conclusion can be drawn that age is synonymous with levels of respect, hierarchy, and importance.  For a person that does not understand language difference or such concepts, it is easy to offend others and cause separation or isolation.

My language of study is French, namely so I can study, understand, and connect with cultures in francophone Africa. Having my intermediate understanding of French was a fantastic resource when I volunteered in Cameroon in 2016 and 2017. Being able to communicate, no matter how slow, with those around you adds a certain level of trust and relation to each interaction. Since I was volunteering for a medical mission, it was imperative that the patients and the volunteer medical personnel were able to communicate their needs to me, and I was able to respond appropriately. I was also able to read documents written in French, comprehend them, and file them accordingly. Had I not known any French, it would have been extremely difficult for others to include me in the work we were doing, and for patients to communicate with me. The patient is the number one priority, and their comfort and ease of treatment are of utmost importance. They deserve someone who can communicate effectively with them, and I am glad I was able to do so.
