At the AAPHP, I was able to secure an internship that allowed me to observe and practice leading group, individual, and family therapy. Due to the scope of services at this agency, I learned about these services on micro, mezzo, and macro scales. At the AAPHP, we get kids with a variety of backgrounds and family lives. This aspect of my placement really required me to consider how culture effects each individual differently.
My internship led me to a temporary position with the Merck Program. At this job, I was able to lead behavioral therapy groups for kids with ASD. I have always understood the importance of celebrating diversity, but this position taught me more about neuro-diversity.
Overall, my coursework at Pitt was incredibly helpful at both of these positions. The ways in which my global studies courses have taught me to consider cultural implications, both positive and negative, helped me to serve each kiddo in the way that was most therapeutic to them.
