Study Abroad Reflections

My study abroad experience in Amman, Jordan was one of the most formative experience in my life. It taught me about myself, the world, and how I see my position in it. Along with valuable language and intercultural communication skills, I learned to examine seemingly obvious facets of life from new perspective. On a more practical level, I also gained experience living abroad—how transportation, food, and life works in other places.

Courses:

My studies abroad consisted of language study and area studies classes. I had the opportunity to learn Modern Standard and Colloquial Arabic from native speakers and then apply what I learned directly in the real world. My area studies classes focused on the politics of the region and, since the professors had direct personal experience with the political systems and situations, I was able to gain understanding of the complex issues facing the region today.

Homestay:

During my time abroad I lived with a host family. The family consisted of a mother, father, and two host siblings. The host siblings were about my age and thus were able to introduce us to other Jordanians and allowed us to join in very typical Jordanian activities. In the house I learned how to communicate and live immersed in a new culture and was able to experience wonderful Jordanian traditions and food (such as mansaf).

Internship:

While in Amman, my program gave me the opportunity to intern. I worked as the development intern for a non-profit organization called Global Nomads Group. This organization fosters global intercultural understanding through virtual exchange programs. I was responsible for outreach and assisted the MENA regional director in grant writing and identifying funding opportunities. I also gained experience working in a professional setting abroad.
