FORGE
Bhutanese Community Association of Pittsburgh
I taught information required for the US citizenship exam as well as English lessons to local Bhutanese refugees in Pittsburgh.
In-Home Tutor — Iraqi Refugee Family
I provided English tutoring lessons as well as general mentorship to an Iraqi refugee family relocated in the Pittsburgh area. I visited their home each weekend during the spring semester of my sophomore year until they moved away from Pittsburgh.
In-Home Tutor — Syrian Refugee Family
I was an in-home tutor for a Syrian refugee family relocated in Pittsburgh. I worked with the family’s two high school daughters to improve their English speaking skills. I continued to work with the family after my volunteer shift ended in August. I would visit the girls every few weeks to help them with their school work as well as to spend time with them and their family
UPMC Presbyterian, Patient Experience Volunteer
As a patient experience volunteer, my main role is to check on admitted patients’ overall experience and satisfaction with their stay at the hospital. Aside from this, I provide patients with companionship and assist patients with a variety of needs such as brushing the patient’s hair or adjusting the patient’s bed. I also provide patients and visiting family members with any requests for things such as books, games, magazines, snacks, and drinks. I am in charge of visiting patients in two units of UPMC Presbyterian.
