Study Abroad Reflections

Pitt in Alcalá gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in Spanish culture and learn about the differences between two countries. Not only did I have the opportunity to study their unique healthcare system through a medical Spanish course and shadowing opportunity but, I also learned about how aspects of everyday life in Spain influence individual and public health in the country. For example, I discovered that most people in Alcalá de Henares and throughout Spain prefer to walk instead of driving. Additionally, although their diet can be considered heavy or rich, it emphasized whole, natural foods, contributing to a healthier country overall. However, other conditions such as high unemployment rates have taken a toll on Spain’s ecmonomy and public health.

Improving our Spanish language skills was a central part to the Pitt in Alcalá program. I spoke Spanish everyday in both academic and community settings. Previously, I had been uncertain about using my Spanish skills but studying abroad forced me to step out of my comfort zone and use them in everyday life. The Spanish people were accepting of skill level you were at and helped you learn along the way.

One of the most challenging and rewarding parts of the trip was being able to shadow a doctor at a local Spanish hospital. It was difficult to transfer my language skills to a fast-paced professional setting but, I was able to interact with patients and members of the community to learn about the Spanish healthcare system.

Living with a host family was a unique part of this experience that allowed for complete engagement with the world around me. My host family was incredibly caring and made sure I learned how to navigate my new environment. I enjoyed sitting down for meals with them and learning about different aspects of daily life in Alcalá. Communicating with them in Spanish helped me improve my language skills and develop a relationship I will never forget. It was interesting to compare how our different views coming from different parts of the world. Getting accustomed to life in Spain can be nerve-racking but living with a host family made it smooth and comfortable. I am incredibly grateful for all of the authentic and delicious meals they cooked and for their involvement in my experience.
