Spanish Minor

Learning a language is essential to expanding your worldview. It is important for making meaningful connections with people and learning about a new culture. In the future I know I need my Spanish skills as I enter the healthcare field as a Physician Assistant. Knowing Spanish will be important as I start my career because effective communication is essential in providing medical treatment. Getting medical care can often be a difficult time for the patient and family members so, speaking the same language can allow them to be more comfortable and receive the best treatment possible.

Language and culture go hand-in-hand. By learning a language, you discover aspects of a culture that you couldn’t learn in English. Learning about vocabulary and the development of words can teach you about a culture’s history and what is important to them. For example, in the Spanish language many words have influences from ancient civilizations and the countries that invaded them over time. You will also find that accents and word choice vary greatly between countries. Especially, between Spain and Latin American countries. In addition, the existence of the formal verb conjugation indicates the importance of elders and being polite in Spanish culture. Language is also constantly changes as cultures change so being familiar with how the two are connected can allow you to effectively engage with others.

When studying abroad in Spain, I was immersed in the community of Alcalá de Henares where most residents spoke little to no English. I stayed with a host family who helped me vastly improve my language skills. I spoke Spanish both in the classroom and in their home. I think learning a language indicates an interest in understanding the culture. It is difficult to imagine how I could have learned about Spanish life if I had no knowledge of the language. A knowledge of Spanish language allowed me to not only enjoy my experience but also understand and learn from it. I don’t think I would have grown to love and appreciate Spanish culture if I could not connect and decipher the meaning behind it all. At times the immersion experience was frustrating. Sometimes it is difficult to get your point across or to keep up in a conversation. However, I learned that it is much more fun and rewarding to try your best and learn from your mistakes. It is easy to assume you are being judged for your imperfect language but, I found that most people are appreciative of your attempt at learning about their culture and will help you improve along the way.
