I started studying the Korean language in my senior year of high school, with formal education starting during my college career.

When I was creating my class schedule the summer before my freshman year of college, I immediately knew I wanted to take a Korean language class. My high school had offered the standard French, German, and Spanish, but having the opportunity to take an Asian language, especially one that holds significance for me in terms of self-identity was something I could not ignore.

Both of my parents speak Korean fluently, so I was initially able to recognize small words or phrases. However, studying Korean at Pitt, plus taking an intensive language course while studying abroad in South Korea, has not only helped me better my reading, writing, and speaking skills, but has also helped me gain a better sense of the Korean culture and what it means to be Korean-American.

I plan to continue my Korean language learning journey as I complete my senior year and after I graduate. I also hope that this journey inspires me to learn other Asian languages to expand my understanding further within the Asian continent.
