Majority if not all of the work I’ve done during my time at Pitt directly correlates with community engagement. After the start of my sophomore year, I’ve been invested in working in a variety of sectors that fall under community engagement. During my sophomore year, I was a Community Assistant (CA) which gave me the ability to work with an Organization called M-Powerhouse. That experience provided me with a new perspective, the trials and tribulations of being a teacher while also showing me the reason why people choose the profession. In that year, I was able to work with amazing teachers and community members to enhance STEM education in primary and secondary schools in Pittsburgh. That experience led me to be in 2 fellowships my Junior year and allowed me to become an intern with the Pittsburgh Human Rights Alliance for my current Senior year. I saw firsthand the vast inequities locally, nationally, and globally and have worked with passionate and talented individuals to make strides towards tangible changes for the present and future.
The work and opportunities I’ve had thus far have not only coincided with my academic career at Pitt but have shown me how political activism is, it’s a sphere in which change occurs over time and you must be patient and consistently be present to see the work you’ve been involved in flourish. I’ve done research based on work experience and vice versa and they all have led back to community engagement.
