Spanish, Intermediate

Studying Spanish not only provided me with a skill helpful for communication but through my coursework I was also exposed to cultures and ways of thinking that differ from the ideas presented in other parts of my education.

With a proficiency in Spanish, I am able to communicate and interact with a larger portion of the US population as well as potentially work internationally. This is very important to me and a skill I hope to use throughout my professional career.

My Spanish coursework beyond grammar courses, focused on successful communication and developing an understanding of the history of Latin America. I was particularly proud of my work in the course Hispanic Civilizations. The course was taught entirely in Spanish but my professor still taught the history in a complex yet incredibly engaging way. We read Gramsci and significant colonization scholars. The philosophical work we did in this class connected very closely to scholarship in my global studies courses. As we learned the history of Latin American countries, the values behind global studies scholarship made all the more sense. Learning the history of colonization from the people who experienced it led me to believe even more strongly in global studies’ prioritization of ideas from the global south.
