Research

For my neuroscience major, I completed my capstone through a collaborative research project. For 3 years I have participated in a research lab that investigates the effects of Nicotinic and the relationship with pain management, adolescence, schizophrenia, and obesity in rats. This research has exposed me to the scientific side of public policy because I have dissected numerous scientific literature in order to truly understand the experiments that I help operate. In addition, this research taught me about the interdisciplinary nature of public health efforts which I later observed during many of the courses in my Global Health concentration.

Toward the completion of the Neuroscience writing practicum course, I was able to analyze the current state of literature and produce a literature review for the adverse impact of low-level lead exposure on cognitive development. This research shed light on the disproportionate burden of disease on marginalized populations. This research also enriched the studies in my global health concentration because I was able to learn about yet another specific health issue (lead poisoning) that can be prevented with access and affordability to quality housing conditions and positive environments. I have included a copy of this research project below. Take a look!

In addition, for the Special topics in East Africa course, I conducted community-based research and data analysis by myself to complete a research project studying the impact that culture has on the perception of health and illness in Tanzania. I interviewed local health leaders and community members to gain an understanding of the structural barriers and cultural notions that contribute to the health status of Tanzanians. I have included a copy of this research project below. Take a look!
