I chose to spend most of my time at the University of Pittsburgh pursuing various volunteering experiences. I have volunteered with organizations affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh, such as the English Language Institue, for which I acted as a conversation partner for an international student learning English.  I have also volunteered for UPMC in a few different capacities, including in the nursing rounds and in the dental clinic. I chose to highlight my volunteering experience in the dental clinic because it was one of my most meaningful. It is through this volunteering experience that I was cemented in the path that I am currently pursuing, as I am attending the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine in the fall.

Currently, I am volunteering with ARYSE and the JFCS to act as an afterschool mentor for refugee children. Additionally, I have recently obtained undergraduate employment with the university as an Undergraduate Laboratory Assistant. This work is meaningful to me because it allows me to apply the skills I have learned during the acquisition of my Microbiology degree.

Undergraduate Laboratory Assistant

University of Pittsburgh Department of Biological Sciences

September 2018 – current

I work in a team in order to prepare the laboratory for the lab courses, as well as maintain the lab stockroom. This includes experimental setup, sterilization, cell culturing, and preparation of materials.

Dental Clinic Volunteer

UPMC

January 2018 – December 2018

I assisted the administrative assistant by filing patient charts, making new charts, speaking to patients, and helping around the office with other administrative tasks. I also shadowed procedures on a case-by-case basis when I desired to see a specific procedure and the patient agreed.
